Fenders and Mudflaps and things

Important Safety Note - Fender usage does pose some safety risks. If an object gets caught between the fender and wheel, a lock-up can result causing the bicycle to stop suddenly. If this occurs up front, the results can be catastrophic. Therefore it is important that there be sufficient clearance between tire and fender. Some plastic fenders have break-away features, but it appears that plastic fenders in general tend to shatter more often than metal fenders and cause mishap. Metal fenders do not have a break-away feature, but in general tend not to fail as often and in general appear to be safer. We are not aware of any data, however, to back up any of this. Of course, millions of bicycles have been supplied with both plastic and metal fenders over the years. But in general, many of those bicycles were typically used at lower speeds. So consider the risks and shop accordingly. |

Phil's Washers Pkg of 6 for $ 7
It can be hard finding thick high-quality leather washers to mount fenders to frames and racks. And leather is the best material for this job. We have a gentleman named Phil who has been working on our Herse bag project (you can inquire if interested), and we had him handcut a bunch of thick leather washers. And boy are these thick. They have 5mm holes (but with fiddling you can fit to 6mm hardware). Since they are handcut, some are more centered than others, but they all work fine. We've used these on recent bike assemblies and found them to be a joy to work with. |
Berthoud Mudflap $ 18 This is the new fancier version. Mudflaps are great - many front fenders don't extend super low (which can be a good thing for transport with some car roof rack arrangements). This mudflap is made of very heavy stout leather with fancy recessed mounting hardware in the Berthoud tradition. You can click on the above photo to see more details. Should the on-line store indicate they are out of stock, please email us as we usually get them back in stock in just a few days. Add to Cart

Berthoud Fender pair 700x40, 700x50, 650bx50, 650b(26)x60
$ 59 with Phil's Washers
click on images below to enlarge
Berthoud fenders are sold with the hardware most bicycles need - the stays and all stay mounting hardware (including the wonderful flush mount stay to fender bits) and the daruma bolt and bolts to mount the fenders to threaded chainstay and seatstay bridges. Six Phil's thick leather washers are also included. For 700c tires up to about 28mm or 29mm, the 40mm fender will give enough clearance for a sporty close fit, although it is ideally suited for tires up to about 26 or 27mm. For 28mm and above (but not crazy big), the 50mm is ideal. For many bikes using the Grand Bois 650b x 42 Hetre tire, the 650b x 50mm Berthoud fender is the best fender option available. The reason is more luck than intent we believe. The Berthoud fender in this size has a relatively flat profile - so it doesn't wrap as far down alongside the fender as some of the traditional French fenders that are not easily obtainable. So the result is that the fender needs less clearance. Sure, it doesn't offer as much protection as a fender that wraps more fully, but it does such a nice job that few will ever notice. But the clearance it provides is welcome on so many bikes that it makes life simpler. We offer the 650b x 60mm, people buy them, but we frankly aren't sure why. These fenders have a very flat profile. So the fender does not wrap terribly far at all around the tire. If you are using the 650b Hetre tires, then you should use the 50mm fenders. While we call these fenders 650b since they match up wonderfully with a 650b diameter tire, technically they are 26". So if you have a bike that uses giant 26" tires, then we suppose these fenders may be for you. Should the on-line store indicate a fender is out of stock, please email us as we usually get them back in stock in just a few days. Honjo 41mm Fenders $ 84
We measured these, and they are closer to 41.5mm or so. If you are running tires up to about 29mm (say the Challenge Parigi Robaix perhaps), these should do fine. We see the slightly wider ones sold in the US, and also the narrower ones, but these may be less common. These fenders are not pre-drilled and the hardware uses L brackets for attachment to the brake bridge and forkcrown. In fact, the stay mounting to the fenders uses the more complicated little hardware stuff too. But we're just happy to have these narrow go-fast narrower Honjo fenders at all. But you will spend some time mounting these babies so be prepared. Since the hardware on these does not mandate leather washers, you will need to order them extra if you are using these on frames with bridges drilled for fenders. |

Honjo 5D bolts (to mount stays to fenders) $ 12 for 4
Honjo 5D bolts to mount stays to fender (Set of (4)). If you have 5mm fender stays and you need to mount them to your fenders, than this is the Honjo fender to do the trick. From the end of the threaded portion to the flat part 12mm. We've heard that sometimes Honjo may supply these bolts "too long" - but these seem just right. When everything is tightened down, the treaded portion is just poking out of the top, which is just right. You don't want them too short as the treads must contact the nylon griploc that is part of the nut.

Campagnolo Bolts $ 8 for 8 pieces
When you are installing fenders or racks, it is nice to have high quality bolts around to do the job. The most common bolt on many bikes is M5 - both modern and vintage bikes use them everywhere. These bolts genuine Campagnolo from the days of Nuovo and Super Record. They have a wonderful chrome finish. They fit things like dropout eyelets, waterbottle bosses, and much more. And when assembling your bike, there are many places to use these. Inquire if you want genuine Campagnolo washers to go with them, but those you can get at the hardware store. You can't get bolts like these at the hardware store. |

Honjo Narrow Stays and 4R Clips special sale $ 5.00
These are for really narrow Honjo fenders - figure the 35's and no wider. You get a pair of the stays, and a package of 4R clips (usually used to attach the stays to the eyelets). You'll need to be creative still on how to attach the stays to the fenders. But in this case, you get what you get and the price is cheap. Why so cheap? We obtained these in bulk from a order mistake many years ago, and we've been sitting on them ever since. Note that most of the mounting hardware used on Honjo's is 5mm, but the 4mm stuff is used on the narrower fenders when lighter weight is desired. Click on the above image for an expanded view.
