Important Safety Note Fender usage does pose some safety risks. If an object gets caught between the fender and wheel, a lock-up can result causing the bicycle to stop suddenly. If this occurs up front, the results can be catastrophic. Therefore it is important that there be sufficient clearance between tire and fender. Some plastic fenders have break-away features, but it appears that plastic fenders in general tend to shatter more often than metal fenders and cause mishap. Metal fenders do not have a break-away feature, but in general tend not to fail as often and in general appear to be safer. We are not aware of any data, however, to back up any of this. Of course, millions of bicycles have been supplied with both plastic and metal fenders over the years. But in general, many of those bicycles were typically used at lower speeds. So consider the risks and shop accordingly. |

Berthoud Fenders - fun information 700x40, 700x50, 650bx50, 650b(26)x60
We provide extra items not included in the standard Berthoud set...
lick on images below to enlarge
Berthoud fenders are typically sold with ALMOST all the hardware most bicycles need - the stays and all stay mounting hardware (including the wonderful flush mount stay to fender bits) and the forkcrown daruma bolt. We add bolts to mount the fenders to threaded chainstay and seatstay bridges and six Phil's leather washers (three thick and three thin). For 700c tires up to about 28mm or 29mm, the 40mm fender will give enough clearance for a sporty close fit, although it is ideally suited for tires up to about 26 or 27mm. For 28mm and above (but not crazy big), the 50mm is ideal. For many bikes using the Grand Bois 650b x 42 Hetre tire, the 650b x 50mm Berthoud fender is the best fender option available. The reason is more luck than intent we believe. The Berthoud fender in this size has a relatively flat profile - so it doesn't wrap as far down alongside the fender as some of the traditional French fenders that are not easily obtainable. So the result is that the fender needs less clearance. Sure, it doesn't offer as much protection as a fender that wraps more fully, but it does such a nice job that few will ever notice. But the clearance it provides is welcome on so many bikes that it makes life simpler. We offer the 650b x 60mm, people buy them, but we frankly aren't sure why. These fenders have a very flat profile. So the fender does not wrap terribly far at all around the tire. If you are using the 650b Hetre tires, then you should use the 50mm fenders. While we call these fenders 650b since they match up wonderfully with a 650b diameter tire, technically they are 26". So if you have a bike that uses giant 26" tires, then we suppose these fenders may be for you. Should the on-line store indicate a fender is out of stock, please email us as we usually get them back in stock in just a few days. |

Phil's Washers Thick or Variety Pack Pkg of 6 for $ 7
It can be hard finding thick high-quality leather washers to mount fenders to frames and racks. And leather is the best material for this job. We have a gentleman named Phil who has been working on our Herse bag project (you can inquire if interested), and we had him handcut a bunch of thick leather washers. And boy are these thick. They have 5mm holes (but with fiddling you can fit to 6mm hardware). Since they are handcut, some are more centered than others, but they all work fine. We've used these on recent bike assemblies and found them to be a joy to work with.
You can also order a variety package that has 2 thick, 2 slightly less thick, and 3 that are notably thinner. This lets you fine tune your fender gap a bit. Thick Washers - Add to Cart Variety Package - Add to Cart

Berthoud Forkcrown Daruma $ 4
For Honjo or Berthoud fenders, this Daruma bolt will get the job done and is fine quality like all Berthoud products. You can click on the above photo for an expanded view. The rubber bushing is thicker than on the Honjo, so a better choice if you have room to take up. Use the Honjo if you have less room.

Minimalist Honjo Mudflap Pair $ 8
A simple mudflap - you get less protection than with a fancier one, but also less risk that the mudflap will trap debris between tire and fender which can be very bad news.
For this very low price, you get two of these nifty flaps.

Campagnolo Bolts and Washers $ 10 for 12 pieces
When you are installing fenders or racks, it is nice to have high quality bolts around to do the job. The most common bolt on many bikes is M5 - both modern and vintage bikes use them everywhere. These bolts genuine Campagnolo from the days of Nuovo and Super Record. They have a wonderful chrome finish. They fit things like dropout eyelets, waterbottle bosses, and much more. And when assembling your bike, there are many places to use these. Inquire if you want genuine Campagnolo washers to go with them, but those you can get at the hardware store. You can't get bolts like these at the hardware store.

Honjo Model H-47 |
Width 48mm Height 23mm
Front Length 950mm Rear Length 1250mm
|
Shallow depth enables this fender to work with tires including even the 42mm Hetre providing there is sufficient height of the fender above the tire. Great for frames with minimal width clearance. |

Honjo Model H-85 |
Width 48mm (really 49-50mm) Height 24mm
Front Length 930mm Rear Length 1200mm
|
A smooth fender with a bit more depth than the H-50. Use with the Hetre only if you can get sufficient height clearance. therwise this might be a perfect fender for 35 to 38mm tires. |

Berthoud 650b x 50mm |
Width 50m Height 22mm
Front Length 810mm Rear Length 1150mm
|
This fender is our most popular 650b fender! It is priced below the Honjo models, but while heavier, its material we think makes it more robust. Perhaps even a safer choice as these are quite stiff and less likely to fold up upon contact with debris. But that is just a guess. Plus - Berthoud hardware is fantastic! |

650b Honjo Model H-50 |
Width 51m Height 21mm
Front Length 950mm Rear Length 1250mm
|
This fender may be the one that gives the most clearance in a minimal space, even more than the H-47. The shallow height of the fender means that if your fender is sufficiently high of the tire, you will have a nice amount of room. A very smooth and simple shape. Also a great choice if you want to paint a stripe down the center of the fender. |

Honjo Model H-79 Hammered |
Width 55m Height 29.7 mm
Front Length 950mm Rear Length 1250mm
Note: Honjo claims this fender is 58mm - it is really 55mm in the hammered version!
|
This fender is tall, so it provides more wrap than the shallower height fenders. With sufficient height it can be used with the Grand Bois Hetre tire. But you must have enough height! If the Hetre goes "way up" into the fender, the side clearance is not enough for safety. For tires in the 35mm to perhaps 38mm range, this fender will provide clearance and lots of wrap around the tire for greater spray protection. |

Honjo Model H-79 Smooth |
Width 58m Height 29.7 mm
Front Length 950mm Rear Length 1250mm
|
This fender is both high and wide enough to offer serious full coverage of a Grand Bois Hetre tire. Not all frames are wide enough to accept this fender. (For a short-round-chainstay frame, the chainstays must usually be bent). But if your frame has the clearance, this elegant fender offers exceptional coverage and elegant looks. This smooth fender has two flutes and some shaping up top to make it very appealing. |

Honjo Model H-80 |
Width 62mm Height 28 mm
Front Length 950mm Rear Length 1250mm
|
A generous sized fender which provides lots of room for the legendary Grand Bois Hetre tire. Note that not many frames have the height and width clearance for this fender. But if you do have a frame that does, this fender is the simple elegant choice. |

Honjo Model H-33 |
Width 31mm Height 8.5mm
Front Length 830mm Rear Length 1200mm

Honjo 700c 31mm fender special thin. A very minimalist fender for 700c that is 31mm wide but only 8.5mm tall. A basically round shape but with an indented groove along the top which is probably intended to provide more clearance around the brake calipers. For that go-fast bike with skinny tires. Just remember that foot clearance may get tight if your bike does not have enough front center. Allow 4 extra business days for shipping |

Honjo Model H-27 |
Width 35mm Height 16.7mm

For many years, this model was a popular Honjo model. It is ideal for those creating a "hot rod" narrow 700c fender bicycle. We really wouldn't use these for tires much beyond 23mm. And make sure you have sufficient front center. The flat on the top of the fender makes a nice area for a paint stripe. |

700c Berthoud 700c x 40mm |
Width 41mm Height 19mm

These smooth round fenders are the ones to use if your running pretty narrow 700c tires. For 30mm tires, we prefer to use the 50mm fenders. But if your frame has limited clearance, then these may be a great choice. And remember that Berthoud fender stays are second to none! |

A round and smooth fender. This fender is pretty similar in shape and size to the Berthoud 700c x 40mm. A great choice if you are running pretty narrow 700c tires. For 30mm tires, we prefer to use the 50mm fenders. But if your frame has limited clearance, then these may be a great choice. |

| There is a "family" of 700c smooth round fenders from Honjo. The models H30, H35, H40, and H50 all have nice round smooth shapes. Their widths are 41mm, 35mm, 45mm, and 50mm respectively. It would be nice if the widths and model numbers were the same. | |||||

700c
Honjo Model H-1 |
Width 42m Height 18.8 mm
Front Length 830mm Rear Length 1200mm
|
Honjo calls these 44mm, but by our ruler they are more like 42mm, so that is what we'll call them here at Rene Herse Bicycles. We typically like to use wider fenders with the Grand Bois Cypres 32mm, but these should still work with them if you have enough height. Note that this model is shorter in length than some of the wider models. But it is very sharp looking. This is a very handsome fender with very nice flutes. |

Honjo Model H-29 |
Width 43m Height 19.5 mm
Front Length 930mm Rear Length 1200mm

A smooth fender with flutes. This width with sufficient height above tire will permit use of tires such as the Grand Bois Cypres. This fender has the "longer" front length of 930mm preferred by many rando riders. |

700c
Honjo Model H-40 |
Width 45mm Height 22mm
Front Length 930mm Rear Length 1200mm
|
This fender is probably our most popular 700c model. It is a very important one: it is the Honjo "clone" of the smooth round French fenders which Rene Herse and Alex Singer used extensively during the 1970's. In fact, a number of years ago the Alex Singer shop obtained a number of these for their new production bikes. We use them on Rene Herse Bicycles also of course! Great for the Grand Bois Cypress, and a bit roomy for the Challenge Parigi Roubaix. But for a typical new 700c machine, this is a top choice. A nice fender also to paint a stripe on. |

Honjo Model H-31
Smooth |
Width 45mm Height 20 mm
Front Length 950mm Rear Length 1250mm
|
Often referred to as the La Paon shape. An absolutely gorgeous 7-sided elegant design. Since there are so many "sides" the shape contours to the tire very well. A fantastic fender for a Grand Bois Cypres. This fender is also very long for those long-fender lovers out there.

Honjo Model H-31
Hammered |
Width 45m Height 20 mm
Front Length 950mm Rear Length 1250mm
|
This fender has become a recent favorite for those using Grand Bois Cypres tires. Unlike the smooth version of the H-31, the hammered version does not have the 7-sided shape. Instead, it has a glorious round shape that for some reason we find more elegant than most other hammered shapes. It is subtle, perhaps just the result of the proportions being "just right". |

700c
Berthoud 700c x 50mm
|
Width 51m Height 23 mm
Front Length 865mm Rear Length 1235mm
|
This fender is our standard fender on Boulder Bicycle 700c models. It gives great clearance with the Grand Bois Cypres tire (called 32mm, closer to 30mm). It is a bit on the large size for the Challenge Parigi Robaix, but we like the extra clearance so that perhaps a wider tire like a Pasela 32mm can be put in. Of course, much of the clearance is really determined by the height of the fender relative to the tire. |

700c
Honjo Model H-50
|
Width 51mm Height 21mm
Front Length 950mm Rear Length 1250mm
|
A nice and wide 700c fender that is smooth and elegant. We use 50mm fenders on many of our Boulder Bicycles because that enables folks to try to squeak in tires that are a bit wider such as the Pasela 32mm. So if your frame has the clearance and you want to leave options open, than consider this width! |
